The vision of KIPP San Diego is to be a thriving region of stable schools filled with happy, successful young people on paths toward choice-filled, contented lives that positively impact our community. KIPP San Diego will be a leader in thinking about opportunity and access for youth in San Diego’s urban communities and a model for collaboration in order to dramatically change life outcomes.
KIPP San Diego is part of the national network of free, open-enrollment, college preparatory public charter schools dedicated to preparing all students for success in college and life. San Diego’s KIPPsters are hard-working, enthusiastic, resilient and focused; they are also mostly low-income, learners of English, new Americans and performing far below grade level when they arrive at our door. We are obsessed with the idea that KIPP San Diego will be a proof point for the idea that KIPPsters are innovative, creative, engaged, passionate and valuable contributors to our community.
KIPP San Diego schools keep promises to students and are building a better tomorrow through our Design Principles: Team and Family, Meaningful Work and Voice.
Team and Family:
We are here to teach the student, not the curriculum and that distinction drives us to build and foster relationships with students. Advisory meetings, Restorative Circles and collaboration with families are hallmarks of KIPP San Diego schools.
Everything we do is relevant to the real challenges before us and has potential to move the needle. Students engage in projects that connect them with the real world, and also participate in leveled groups to build specific skills. All students are exposed to four years of Orchestra and Physical Education and every year, students tour at least four colleges.
Students are supported in being leaders of their own learning and are given choice and voice where possible. Social-emotional development is a critical academic intervention: students participate in restorative circles and advisory groups to build relationships and community.
Our teachers, students, and parents have a structured, meaningful way to talk about and develop social emotional skills: KIPP Adelante is especially focused on seven highly predictive strengths: zest, grit, self- control, optimism, gratitude, social intelligence, and curiosity. We are providing KIPPsters with the tools to change the world as only they can—and as they are uniquely positioned to do.
